Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is a personal documentary?
It’s basically a filmed conversation — a relaxed, guided interview where someone gets to tell their stories in their own words. I take that conversation, layer in footage and details from the day, and turn it into a short documentary that feels real, human, and true to who they are. It’s a way of holding onto the person, not just the memory.
Where does the filming take place?
Most people choose their home because it feels comfortable, but it doesn’t have to be. We can film in your backyard, on a porch, at a cabin, or in any quiet space with enough room for a simple lighting setup. The main thing is that it needs to be reasonably quiet so the audio is clean. Leaf blowers, loud fans, pets, and thin walls are the usual culprits, but we can talk through options.
How long does the session take?
Plan on about 60–90 minutes of actual conversation time. I’ll handle setup and breakdown on my end — you won’t have to do anything except be there and get comfortable.
How long does editing take?
Usually 2–4 weeks, depending on the project. I'll keep you posted as I go.
Can we include old photos or video clips?
If you have old photos, home videos, or anything special you'd like woven in, we can absolutely do that. We’ll talk about what makes sense during the planning meeting.
Do we need to clean or stage the house?
You don’t need to deep-clean or redecorate — this is not HGTV. But it is helpful to have one spot in mind that’s ready to go when I arrive. Just a simple, comfortable space where we can set up lights and cameras without distractions. I’ll help adjust it if needed.
Who can be interviewed?
Honestly, anyone whose story matters. Parents, grandparents, siblings, adult children, couples, high school or college graduates reflecting on their life so far, new parents, people entering retirement… or just someone who wants their story told while they’re here to tell it. If you’re not sure who the “right” person is, we can talk through it together. There’s no wrong answer.
How should we prepare?
You don’t need to rehearse anything. A few days before filming, I’ll send custom questions and a little guidance to help everyone think back on moments, stories, or chapters of their life. Most people skim it, think for a minute, and that’s more than enough.
What if someone is nervous on camera?
Totally normal. Everyone is a little stiff for the first minute or two. Then they settle in, forget the camera is there, and we just talk. It’s not a performance — it’s a conversation.
What do we receive at the end?
You’ll get your finished film as a digital file you can download, share, or save for the future. If you want, we can add things like custom USBs, video books, or even a small family screening. Some families like to make an evening out of it.
Do you offer gift packages?
Yes. A personal documentary makes a meaningful gift for so many moments — Mother’s or Father’s Day, anniversaries, birthdays, retirements, graduations, even “just because” gifts when you feel time moving a little faster than usual. If you’re giving it as a gift, I can send you something digital or printable to present to them.
Do you travel?
I’m based in West Michigan, but I can travel for an additional fee. If you’re not sure whether you’re close enough, send me a message and we’ll figure it out.
Why these films matter
Every family has stories that deserve to be kept. The laughter, the familiar phrases, the way someone tells a memory only they can tell it.
Life moves fast.
People get older.
Kids grow up.
And the moments that make a family what it is often slip by without being captured.
A Legacy Film gives your family something you can return to — their voice, their presence, their way of remembering.
Not just a moment in a photo, but the person behind it.
It’s the simplest way to keep the stories you love close.

Why I Started History Of:

Hi! I’m Stephen, and that’s my wife Bethany. She’s great — you’d love her.
I’ve spent most of my adult life with a camera in my hand — from my time in the Army, to years filming weddings, to teaching, to just capturing life as it happens. The more I’ve filmed, the more I’ve realized that the moments that matter most aren’t the big ones. They’re the everyday stories, the ordinary conversations, the familiar laughter that makes up a life.
My parents, my kids, my grandparents — everyone’s getting older, and I’m learning how quickly time moves. We’re all crafting a legacy, whether we think about it or not. I wanted a way to hold onto that — to help families like mine preserve the voices, faces, and stories that tell who we are.
That’s why I created History Of: and the Legacy Film series. It’s my way of making that kind of preservation simple, comfortable, and beautiful. I plan to offer Legacy Films a few times each year, and I hope each one becomes something your family treasures for generations.
Because the stories we live every day deserve to be remembered.
